Most people are familiar with Acupuncture - many will have experienced it and many more will have heard about it. It is one of the big complimentary therapies and like Hypnosis and Astrology it stretches back into the annals of time.
Maybe not so many are familiar with Acupressure. But if you have ever seen anyone wear a wrist band to combat sea or travel sickness then you will have seen it in operation.
The theory is that we have energy lines (Meridian energy lines) running throughout our bodies. Some of these run close to the surface of the skin. These energy lines run between the Chakra - theoretical points in our bodies where our energy is most in contact with the great energy of the universe beyond our individual physical boundary. There are 7 major Chakra within our trunk and head and a further 20 medium Chakra and an uncounted number of smaller Chakra throughout the rest of our bodies.
It is thought that the flow of Meridian energy becomes blocked or reversed when we are ill or we have bodily discomfort or are in a psychologically compromised state - and an addiction like smoking counts as a psychologically compromised state as do stress, negative thinking, phobias and so on.
Acupuncture stimulates the energy flow by inserting a fine needle at specific points along the Meridian energy line. Acupressure (for example the travel sickness wrist band) puts pressure on the Meridian energy lines at specific points. EFT too uses the Meridian energy lines—but in EFT you tap the lines at specific points.
The results are the same. It works! And in my experience of 5 years of working with EFT it is incredibly good at helping people to change negative beliefs about themselves.
EFT began with the work of Dr Roger Callahan who developed a Meridian energy line therapy called TFT (Thought Field Therapy).
Callahan developed a set of "algorithms" - a sequence of acupuncture points, with each individual algorithm being specific for particular dysfunctions and illnesses. The same points used in a different order were more algorithms again specific for precise disease processes.
Callahan taught these algorithms together with diagnosis techniques.
Gary Craig who took his TFT training with Callahan in 1991 set out to simplify the procedure and eventually concluded that the sequence of tapping was really of little importance. And thus evolved EFT as we know it today. Like all good therapies it continues to develop and evolve with input from the many practitioners all around the world today.
For research involving TFT and EFT see the website of Peter Graham who gives us the results of the studies undertaken by Monica Pignott a leading practitioner prominent in the TFT world. As you can see there remains dissention between the supporters of TFT and those of EFT - but this is no way detracts from the efficacy of the method.
I trained in EFT with Steve Burgess of Lionheart Training in 2006 and have used EFT in my practice ever since. I am still blown away by how effective this therapy can be.
